Uganda
An abundance of natural wonders
The small land-locked nation of Uganda is situated on the East Africa Plateau. Famously named the ‘Pearl of Africa’ by Winston Churchill, the country has varying landscapes and a highly diverse climate due to Lake Victoria and the Nile Basin. Uganda boasts lush lowlands teeming with bird-life, primate-filled mountain rain forests and arid savannah regions home to the big 5, making it an incredibly rewarding and diverse safari destination. While Uganda is often remembered for its tragic history of dictatorships, the country has reinvented itself as a hugely hospitable and welcoming place to visit. The natural wonders of the country are not to be missed.
Uganda is home to approximately half of the world’s mountain gorilla population and the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the southwest corner of Uganda is an exceptional destination for gorilla trekking. Accurately named, the forest evokes adventure book notions of exploration through thick rainforest, at points the trek can be arduous but ultimately exceptionally fulfilling. We ensure your encounters with these critically endangered species are deeply respectful so the whole experience is not only unforgettable but also contributes to the long-term restoration of this fastinacting primate. Slightly north lies Kibale National Park, home to a large habituated chimpanzee population. In Kibale, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Semliki, there is the opportunity to trek for chimpanzees within the forest canopies and amongst hidden gorges. Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most popular safari game reserve; with a wide variety of habitats the park is home to numerous large mammals and primates and to the rare tree climbing lions of Ishasha Gorge.
A bird watchers paradise
Uganda’s national symbol, depicted in the centre of the country’s flag is the Crested Crane, unsurprising as the country is one of the continent’s top bird watching destinations. Uganda is home to over 1,000 species of birds, several of which are incredibly rare and exclusively found in the country - for keen birdwatchers - Uganda is unmissable. For those seeking adventure, Uganda offers world-class white-water rafting outside Jinja and trekking on the snow-capped glaciers of the Ruwenzori Mountains.
Small, chic and discreet lodges nestled within the trees
Uganda has immense unspoiled diversity. Our selected forest lodges are designed to blend in with the environment, discreetly nestled within the tree canopies. Camps are often in remote locations meaning guests are fully immersed in the natural habitat and primate families often visit the camps themselves. Typically high-end lodges and safari camps in Uganda are relatively small and owner run providing an exclusive and highly personal experience.
